Math Workshop classes (A) and (B) are designed to be taken together, as students who enroll in both are more likely to master math skills and benefit from a more comprehensive program. However, each class may also be taken independently, since different topics and skills are addressed in each session. Please review the descriptions of each class carefully.

Class description:

This class is not intended to substitute your standard homeschool math curriculum. Rather, it aims to enhance and complement your at-home learning, providing your student with additional opportunities to engage with mathematics. This course is focused exclusively on elementary math skills. Older students are welcome to enroll if they seek extra assistance, a review, or support in mastering elementary math concepts; however, the curriculum will not extend to middle school mathematics. The focus will be on developing fluency in fundamental math skills, with particular emphasis on math fact fluency. Students will be most successful if they enroll in both A & B sessions, but they can be taken separately.

Workshop Session A:

Students will participate in brief math lessons as a whole class before dividing into smaller groups to engage in various activities. They will receive guided instruction from the teacher, utilizing math manipulatives and whiteboards to tackle problems, allowing the teacher to support and assess their comprehension. Following this, students will transition to using Chromebooks to enhance their math skills and facts through an online program. Subsequently, they will focus on fact fluency by participating in games and interactive activities. Finally, students will work independently at math activity centers to further reinforce their skills.

Weekly Stations that students will rotate through during class time...

Class Instruction - Class instruction time will encompass the entire class learning mathematical concepts and vocabulary, with the teacher providing demonstrations.

Meet the Teacher - During meet the teacher rotation, small groups will engage with the teacher for additional instruction on math concepts. This will include personalized assistance utilizing whiteboards, manipulatives, visual aids, and hands-on modeling to enhance understanding of the material.

Math Facts - During the math facts rotation, students will engage with flashcards, participate in math games, access online practice tools, and complete timed fluency assessments to enhance their proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Independent Centers - In the independent math center rotation, students will engage in self-directed activities that reinforce their mathematical skills. They will apply the concepts they have previously learned to solve various math tasks and story problems, serving as a spiral review of the material covered.

Online Math Practice - In the online math practice rotation, students will engage with an independent program known as Moby Math. This program identifies and addresses gaps in essential math skills necessary for understanding mathematical concepts. By focusing on specific areas of difficulty, Moby Math enables students to advance as soon as they demonstrate mastery of the material.

Important Details:

Language Workshop classes (A) and (B) are designed to be taken together, as students who enroll in both are more likely to master language skills and benefit from a more comprehensive program. However, each class may also be taken independently, since different topics and skills are addressed in each session. Please review the descriptions of each class carefully.

Language Workshop Session A:

This class will help students develop a strong understanding of parts of speech and English grammar. Each week focuses on a single concept—such as nouns, verbs, pronouns, punctuation, and sentence structure—through clear instruction and engaging writing activities like comic strips, treasure maps, and short writing challenges. Students practice identifying and applying grammar rules, building confidence in writing clear, correct sentences and strengthening their editing skills.

Students also participate in handwriting practice, focusing on proper letter formation in both print and cursive. Through consistent, guided practice, they work toward mastering these essential skills.

Students are highly encouraged to enroll in this course alongside Language Workshop (B): Spelling. Taking both classes provides a more comprehensive and well-rounded language program.

Prerequisites:

Students enrolling in this class must have a solid understanding of their letters and sounds, along with the ability to perform basic reading and writing tasks. Additionally, they should be capable of working independently and maintaining focus during independent activities.

Language Workshop Session B:

This course supports learners of all ages who need extra practice and guidance in spelling. It provides clear, structured instruction focused on phonics, syllable patterns, and word structure, including prefixes, suffixes, roots, and spelling rules. Students will learn common spelling patterns, frequently used words, and commonly misspelled words while developing a deeper understanding of how words work and how to apply that knowledge in their writing.

Through engaging spelling centers—such as word sorts, morphology mapping, syllable practice, writing activities, editing challenges, interactive games, and the online program SpellingJoy.com—students will build confidence and strengthen their skills in meaningful, hands-on ways.

Students are highly encouraged to take this class alongside Language Workshop (A): Grammar and Handwriting. Enrolling in both classes provides a more comprehensive and well-rounded language program.

Prerequisites:

Students enrolling in this class must have a solid understanding of their letters and sounds, along with the ability to perform basic reading and writing tasks. Additionally, they should be capable of working independently and maintaining focus during rotation activities.

Upon completion, students will present their projects to the class for evaluation. Additionally, bonus projects will be offered for those who complete their initial assignments and seek further learning opportunities.

The following projects are scheduled for this year:

GOAL SETTING (This is an individual project)

In this project, students will explore the concepts of proactivity, prioritization, and planning, as well as the effective setting of goals essential for achieving success in their lives. Following this exploration, they will develop a comprehensive goal plan and present their findings to the class.

GEOGRAPHY SCAVENGER HUNT (This is a group project)

In this project, students will design their own Geography Scavenger Hunt to teach others about different places around the world. They will create clues that lead players from one location to another while learning important facts about each place.

CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY (This is an individual project)

In this project, students will engage in research to explore their community's dynamics and structure, as well as the principles of good citizenship. Following their investigation, they will create a comic book-style project that creatively illustrates their newfound knowledge in an enjoyable format.

MASTERING MEASUREMENTS (This is a group project)

In this project, students will explore various measurement systems and conduct research to understand their applications. They will then create a game or an explanatory project designed to illustrate and enhance comprehension of different facets of these systems.

REAL WORLD FINANCE (This is an individual project)

Students will engage in research on significant future purchases and develop a spreadsheet to assess the financing required for these acquisitions, including aspects such as mortgages, interest rates, and payment schedules. This exercise will provide them with a comprehensive understanding of how financing operates and equip them with the skills to utilize spreadsheets for calculating and managing financial information effectively.

SOCIAL SKILLS AND COMMUNICATION (This is a group project)

In this project, students will explore social skills and communication techniques to enhance their ability to understand and interact with others effectively. They will subsequently design a choose-your-own-adventure style game that illustrates the impact of both positive and negative social and communication skills.
