Introduction to Sign Language is a fun and interactive class designed to introduce young students to the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). Through games, songs, and hands-on activities, children will learn key signs for common words and phrases, including greetings, family members, emotions, and everyday objects. This course encourages language development, communication skills, and cultural awareness in a playful and supportive environment.
In this class, students will have the opportunity to practice visual and tactile communication, developing both their signing skills and their understanding of how different communities use language. The focus will be on building confidence, increasing vocabulary, and learning to communicate with others through the expressive and creative use of sign language.
By the end of the course, students will have gained a basic understanding of sign language, along with the confidence to communicate simple messages and show respect for the diversity of language and culture in their community.

The Sign Language course for grades 4-8 offers students a deeper dive into American Sign Language (ASL), expanding their vocabulary and communication skills through interactive lessons and hands-on practice. Students will learn a variety of signs for everyday vocabulary, including categories such as family, school, emotions, animals, and more. This course will also explore basic grammar and sentence structure in ASL, helping students communicate more effectively in a visual language.
In addition to learning vocabulary and grammar, the class will incorporate activities like sign language songs, games, and role-playing to help students practice using ASL in real-world situations. Students will also be introduced to Deaf culture and the history of sign language, building cultural awareness and understanding. By the end of the course, students will be able to carry on simple conversations in ASL, enhancing their communication skills and fostering inclusion within their community.
By the end of the year, students will have gained an expanded ASL vocabulary, an understanding of basic ASL grammar, and the ability to communicate effectively in simple conversations.
