SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL Classes taught by Lani Christensen...

Lani Christensen

Lani’s journey into leadership began in her youth when she participated in the scouting program with her family. These early experiences taught her valuable leadership and life skills. As a teenager, she worked as camp staff at Camp Strawberry River and Camp Maple Dell, helping to plan and lead youth activities.

Lani pursued her passion for youth leadership by earning a degree in Recreation Management and Youth Leadership at BYU. In 2020, she created the Teams for Teen Leadership class and later developed Crafting Service Leadership to provide a calmer, more creative learning environment for teens. Lani has a deep passion for teaching and mentoring teens, believing that they hold the key to a brighter future.

Lani Christensen is a former competitive ballroom dancer who studied dance at BYU. While she may now be competing against her family in Just Dance on the Nintendo Switch, her passion for dancing is still going strong! Five years ago, Lani launched a social dance class at Alliance for teens, and she’s excited to add folk and line dancing to her offerings starting in Fall 2025. Her classes are designed to be fun, active, and welcoming, creating a space where everyone can feel confident, connect with friends, and enjoy dancing to the rhythm!

Course Overview:

"Crafting Service Leadership" is a hands-on, creative course designed to help teens develop important leadership skills through crafting projects that serve others. Along with crafting, students will participate in fun activities and games that they plan and lead themselves. This class is ideal for those who thrive in a calm, low-energy environment and offers a space for meaningful connection and personal growth.

Limited Class Size and Calm Atmosphere
Unlike the high-energy vibe of the Teams for Teens leadership classes, this course is designed for students who would benefit from a quieter, service-oriented setting. The class size is intentionally small (limited to 10 students) to foster an intimate, supportive environment. Preference will be given to students not already enrolled in Teams for Teens.

Learning Goals:

 Service Leadership:
Students will learn to lead with a service-oriented mindset. They will experience the impact of using their hands to serve others. Through their creative projects, they will gain confidence and a sense of purpose, while also improving mental and physical well-being. They’ll discover that even small acts of service can have a meaningful and lasting impact.

Social Leadership:
The course also emphasizes leading and developing positive relationships through collaboration, communication, connection, and cooperation—the 4 C’s of social leadership.

Syllabus:

Each week, students will engage in a variety of activities to practice both service and social leadership skills in a calm and supportive environment. The schedule includes the following:

  • Manners Moment:
Based on 52 Modern Manners for Teens by Brooke Romney, each class begins with a discussion of one social skill. Students will learn essential manners to succeed in relationships, school, work, and life. Topics include things like online privacy, the importance of self-presentation, and treating others with respect.
  • Hobby Highlights:
Think of this as a "show-and-tell" for hobbies. Every student will present a hobby of their choice to the class. It can be anything—from playing sports to reading, collecting rocks, or caring for pets. Students may bring photos, objects, or even a demonstration to share. If the hobby involves potentially dangerous items (like knives or weapons), pictures or videos should be used instead.
  • Lead a Game:
Each student will have the chance to plan and lead a small group game on the same day as their hobby highlight. The games will typically last 10-15 minutes. This experience gives students the opportunity to practice leadership by explaining the rules, making decisions, and guiding others. It's a supportive, non-intimidating space for teens to step into leadership roles.
  • Teacher-led Activities:
I will plan activities based on the class’s needs and sensitivities. Some activities may focus on service, while others will target leadership skills in different contexts. Participation is mandatory unless a valid reason is provided for sitting out. Those sitting out should stay with the class or call home if they are unwell.
  • Service Projects:
The class will engage in crafting service projects aimed at benefiting others. I will introduce each project and demonstrate the crafting involved. Students will learn about the individuals or organizations they are helping through these projects. Some crafting projects may span multiple weeks.
  • Kindness Chronicles:
Students will share stories of kindness, either something they have done, something done for them, or a story they’ve heard. These stories will be compiled into a written summary and shared at our Spring Student Showcase. The goal is to inspire others by showcasing kind actions and spreading positivity.

Assessment and Grading:

This course has no formal tests or grades. Students are expected to participate, engage in activities, and respect their peers. The emphasis is on creating a positive, supportive environment where everyone can grow as a leader.

What do you need for this class?

  • Dressed to Participate: Wear comfortable shoes/ clothes you can work in. Some projects may get a little messy, so please dress accordingly.
  • Hygiene:  Maintaining good hygiene is essential for feeling fresh and confident. Please shower, wear clean clothes, use deodorant, and brush your teeth. Avoid wearing heavy perfumes or body sprays, as they can be irritants to others. If you wear fragrances, please use them sparingly.
